The dteenergy.com web site is moving from the use of e-mail addresses to user names for account access. During the registration process, new customers can create a user name of their choice. Customers registered on dteenergy.com before July 27, have the option of continuing to use their e-mail address to login or to create a new user name.
+
Later this summer, registered users of dteenergy.com will be prompted to create a new User Name when they access their account. Once a user name is created, it will replace the use of an e-mail address to sign in to dteenergy.com.
+
This is the first of a series of changes we’re making to our web site to bring you the benefits of the latest technology and best-in-class practices.
+
Your new User Name is up to you, and can contain upper and/or lower-case letters, numbers, and select special characters.
User Name rules for dteenergy.com are:
- Length must be between 6 and 25 characters
- No blank spaces
- Must contain at least one alphabetic (a to z) character
- Alphabetic characters are case-sensitive
- Cannot include special characters that have alternate uses across different computer platforms “ # + , ; < = > ~ ! @ $ % ^ & * ( ) { } [ ] ‘ : ?
- Because @ is an excluded special character, you cannot continue to use an email address as a User Name.

Yes. Changing your login ID does not change the e-mail address we use to send you messages. If your e-mail address changes, you can update it at any time. Just login to your account to make changes to your personal information.

We offer online access to your DTE Energy electric and/or natural gas account information, eliminating the need to pick up the telephone or visit an office. It's flexible, secure and free. By registering and creating a user name and password, you can view and pay your bill online, view your payment history, access previous bills, report a meter reading, turn services on or off, update your account information and enroll in special programs. You can do business with us using your computer, smartphone or other mobile device.
+
To register, click the "Register" link below the account login.
If you are a new customer to the DTE Energy service area, you will need to establish your account with a Social Security Number (or Federal Tax ID for business customers) and a user name of your choice. Once registered, only your user name and password will be required for future visits.
If you are already a customer, simply provide your DTE Energy account number and your e-mail address when prompted during the registration process. Then create a password and an answer to your selected secret question. Once registered, only your user name and password will be required for future visits.
+
When you identify yourself in the registration process, all accounts attached to your Social Security or Tax Identification Number will be associated with your sign-in ID. If you receive one DTE Energy bill for both your natural gas and electric service, you need to register only once. If you have both residential and business accounts, however, you need to create user IDs and passwords for each account type. To switch from one account to another, sign out of the current user ID and sign in with the other one.
+
If you forget your password, select the "Forgot your password?" link on the sign-in screen. Enter your e-mail address, the answer to the secret question you identified when you registered, and the last four digits of your Social Security or Tax Identification Number. Once the e-mail address, secret question answer, and personal identification are validated, you will be able to create a new password and sign in to your account.
+
To change personal information, such as your e-mail address, phone number, or billing address, sign in to your account where you can update your online information.
+
We use industry-standard encryption technologies when transferring customer data. When we transfer sensitive information, we redirect you to a secure server that encodes all the data before it is transmitted over the Internet.
To use some of our online features, a full Social Security number (SSN), or the last four digits, are required for positive identification. We cross-check the SSN provided with information already contained in our billing system to verify that an online user is, in fact, the individual associated with that account. This is a standard business precaution to ensure your privacy and security. Using positive identification helps protect you from fraudulent service requests and slamming.
Some tips for protecting your personal information online
- Do not disclose sensitive personal information in response to an unsolicited e-mail. DTE Energy will not ask for your personal or account information in an e-mail, unless you have contacted us first and we're trying to get clarity about your request.
- Be sure any links embedded in the e-mail are actually taking you to a DTE Energy site. Verify that the Web address in your browser window matches the address shown in the e-mail. If you doubt that the e-mail or the address is legitimate, instead of clicking the link, log into the dteenergy.com site directly and navigate to the desired page.

DTE Energy utilizes state-of-the-art technology and processes to protect your personal information and privacy.
The financial account information you provide when creating a Payment Method is encrypted and sent directly to our bank through a secured data link. Once the bank verifies that the financial account information is correct, it assigns the Payment Method a unique ID Number, and then stores that information in a highly secured file system. At this point, the only place your financial account information is stored is in our bank’s highly secured file system – where nobody from the bank, DTE Energy, or anywhere else can see it. All payments are made via the unique ID Number, which is used to generate a payment request directly to your financial institution.
This ensures that your financial account information is protected and not accessible to anyone at DTE Energy, our bank, or any unauthorized persons that may breach your system, our system, or our bank’s system. This is why we ask you to assign a name to your Payment Method – because the unique ID Number assigned to your Payment Method wouldn’t have any meaning to you, and would be confusing if you had multiple Payment Methods.
