DTE Energy and its subsidiaries have garnered several environmental awards.
ISO 14001
Two of our MichCon facilities, the Allen Road Service Center and the Belle River Mills Compressor Station, recently joined the ranks of ISO certified sites. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 certification is a rigorous standard for evaluating a facility's Environmental Management System and guaranteeing continuous improvement. All seven of our coal-fired power plants are certified. Only a few other power plants in the nation have met these stringent requirements.
Corporate Wildlife Habitat Certification
The Wildlife Habitat Council's certification and international accreditation program recognizes commendable wildlife habitat management and environmental education programs. Twelve DTE Energy facilities are certified by the WHC. Several sites have been nominated or received prestigious awards from WHC.
Clean Corporate Citizen (C3)
The State of Michigan recognizes regulated businesses that demonstrate stewardship and a strong environmental ethic through their operations as Clean Corporate Citizens. Our Fermi 2 power plant was the first nuclear power plant in the state to achieve such recognition. Five Detroit Edison coal-fired plants have also attained C3 status: Belle River, Harbor Beach, Monroe, River Rouge, and St. Clair Power Plants.
Neighborhood Environmental Partners Gold Award
The River Rouge Power Plant received the Neighborhood Environmental Partners (NEP) Gold Award from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality in July 2008. River Rouge, the first DTE Energy power plant to win the award, worked with several local partners to restore a section of the Detroit River to natural conditions using “softshore engineering.” The once barren, gravel shoreline is now a natural habitat with native plants, fish and other wildlife. The NEP award represents more than just an accolade for the company; it demonstrates the importance of community and the environment to DTE Energy.
Michigan Recreation and Parks Association
DTE Energy was recognized by the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association in January 2008 with the Grand Award for our long-standing commitment to improving the quality of life for Michigan residents, particularly through our tree-planting programs, wildlife habitat enhancement efforts, and support of hiking/biking trails throughout the state.
Tree Line USA
Tree Line USA recognizes utilities that provide a program of quality tree care, annual worker training in quality tree-care practices, and a tree-planting and public-education program. Detroit Edison is one of 150 utilities nationwide to receive recognition this year for its tree-care program, and the only Michigan utility to receive this award for 12 years in a row (2007). The Tree Line USA program is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Urban and Community Forestry program.
