When you switch to natural gas, your plumbing and some of your existing appliances will need to be converted. Many variables can impact the total cost, including the amount of additional piping needed to connect all your appliances to the natural gas line.

We recommend contacting at least two licensed heating or plumbing contractors for estimates. Here is a sample of licensed professionals that other customers have hired.

Installation usually takes four to six weeks, weather permitting. We will discuss installation timing with you prior to your project starting. Here’s what to expect:

  • MISS Dig  will place flags on the property to mark underground utility lines. Make sure children and neighbors know to leave them in place until the work is complete.
  • DTE will hang a meter bracket and dig holes at the street and wall outside of your home to run the service line.
  • We will repair any affected sidewalks, lawns and driveways.

When your service line has been installed, schedule an appointment with your heating or plumbing contractor to convert your home. Also, monitor the level of your current fuel source. It should be depleted before conversion day.

Your meter must be installed on the same day as your contractor appointment. Contact DTE to request a meter installation at least five business days before your contractor appointment.

Understanding Natural Gas Installation Costs

We keep service affordable for all customers by asking those requesting new service to cover necessary installation costs. This ensures the costs won't be passed along to all customers in the form of a rate increase.

Costs you are responsible for will be detailed in a letter mailed to you. You have the option of paying these costs in one lump sum or in monthly installments.
